Peter Kayafas: Four Decades on the American Road is now on view at the College of Charleston’s Simons Gallery. Curated by Elizabeth Bick, the exhibition draws from forty years of continuous travel and photographic exploration across the United States.

Working across portraiture, landscape, and street photography, Kayafas approaches the American road as a place of discovery rather than confirmation. The exhibition reflects his long-term investigation of American culture, land, and identity—and what he has described as a form of “introverted patriotism”: an attentive commitment to seeing the country clearly while resisting nostalgia, stereotype, and easy conclusions.
